Electric Forklifts and AGVs: A Step Toward a More Sustainable Future

In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, the shift towards sustainability is no longer just a trend—it’s a necessity. Manufacturing plants play a crucial role in this movement. With industrial processes traditionally contributing significantly to carbon emissions and environmental degradation, it’s imperative for manufacturers to adopt greener practices. An impactful change companies can make is transitioning from diesel-powered equipment to electric alternatives.  

As one of the frontrunners in this movement, ConMet has taken the initiative to start the transition from diesel and propane to electric forklifts and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) at all their manufacturing facilities worldwide. This strategy and investment showcase their dedication to the environment and the workforce, setting an example for the industry.  

Benefits: Cleaner and Greener Operations  

Reduced carbon emissions: Electric forklifts and AGV’s don’t burn any fossil fuels, which means they don’t release any carbon emissions. Diesel units, on the other hand, are notorious for their carbon emissions. For example, forklifts at ConMet’s Nanjing plant used about 1,500 gallons of diesel and emitted about 35,000 pounds of CO2 per year. Switching the plant to all electric forklifts and AGVs eliminated tailpipe emissions and the cost of diesel fuel for this type of application entirely.  

Increased energy efficiency: Electric forklifts are inherently more energy efficient. They require less energy to perform the same tasks as their diesel equivalents, leading to lower overall energy consumption. This efficiency not only reduces operational costs but also lessens the environmental impact of energy production.  

Decreased air and noise pollution: The elimination of diesel exhaust fumes leads to cleaner air both inside and outside the plant. The contrast in noise levels between diesel and electric forklifts is dramatic, especially within enclosed spaces. Diesel models operate at roughly 100db compared to the quieter 60db of electric forklifts.   

Improved reliability: Electric forklifts and AGVs, with their simpler mechanics and fewer moving parts, also tend to be more reliable and require less maintenance than diesel forklifts. Companies that invest in electric forklifts and AGVs are not just making a green choice – they’re also making a smart economic decision.  

Advancing Sustainable Solutions  

ConMet uses electric forklifts and AGVs in our plants in North America and China. Employing these advanced technologies is part of our strategy to optimize production efficiency, reduce waste, minimize energy use, and decrease our carbon footprint. In fact, ConMet has fully transitioned its Nanjing, China, facility from diesel forklifts to electric.

This move is part of a broader strategy that we have adopted to minimize our environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices. It also aligns with scope 1 and 2 emissions mitigation. We have removed our direct diesel emissions (Scope 1) and replaced it with an electrified solution that will be powered by renewable electricity.
